Hiring Procedures

If you would like to apply for a tutoring position in the Collaboratory, please keep the following guidelines in mind.

Your Materials

Please submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume, as well as a cover letter explaining your interest in, and qualifications for, the position. You will also need to submit a writing sample (no more than 8 pages, please). These materials should be emailed to Dr. Andersen as attachments in PDF form. Dr. Andersen will distribute these materials to the rest of the Collaboratory staff for review.

A Word about Our Hiring Procedure

Taking current writing center theory and practice into account, the Writing Collaboratory follows a democratic hiring process, meaning that all staff members are involved. All staff members review candidates’ submitted materials, are present during interviews, and take part in the final hiring decisions. We view the Collaboratory as a community; as such, everyone has a voice in major decisions.

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, we will not be able to hire all applicants. However, completing the tutor training course (WRI3020) makes you eligible to tutor for us in the future. We will keep your materials on file, and may contact you if/when there is an opening. The Collaboratory also offers “internships” to candidates who are not hired but who would like to strengthen their tutoring skills. If we feel that you are a good fit for this type of position, Dr. Andersen will contact you with more details.

Some Deadlines

  • April 20th: All materials must be submitted. Late materials will not be accepted.
  • April 22nd – April 26th: Interviews will be conducted. Dr. Andersen will contact you to schedule a day and time within this time frame.
  • May 2nd: Candidates will be notified of our final decisions via email or phone call.
