Guidelines: Tutoring Philosophy

We’re now nearing the end of 15 weeks full of writing center practice and theory. We’ve read scholarship, observed others, and tested the waters of tutoring ourselves. This assignment asks you to synthesize those experiences in the form of a philosophy statement. The idea of this philosophy statement is to explain your personal approach to tutoring using examples of personal experiences while pointing to theoretical evidence from scholarly sources. How have your experiences, readings, and discussions this semester come helped you establish a specific approach to tutoring? If you were to speak with someone outside of the Collab community about what “writing tutoring” means to you, what would you say?

  • Take a look at the examples of tutoring and teaching philosophies to get an idea of the tone, style, and format of this particular genre:
  • Your philosophy statement should be about 2-3 pages long. Since you will be writing about your own personal experience and readings, you should be writing in the first person.
  • Your reflection should refer to one or two specific moments from your observations or tutoring experiences this semester that stand out as evidence of the points you are trying to make.
  • Make connections to any readings that have impacted your approach to tutoring. Be sure to cite these sources using MLA (yay!) format for in-text citations and a works cited page.
  • Your reflection should emphasize strong critical thinking, a clear understanding of the concepts we’ve already begun to discuss, as well as a sophisticated command of paragraph structure and language.
